Projek seni ini digagas oleh saya dan Ori Riantori, dilaksanakan pada pertengahan 2005 di BTW space & iF Venue - Bandung (Maret-April). Kemudian yang kedua di Outmags Artuary/Open Circuit Community - Yogyakarta (Juni-Juli).
Latar belakang projek dimulai dari obrolan pengalaman ketika kami oprasi usus buntu sampai ngalor-ngidul tentang berbagai hal. Pada proses sebelum kita di bius total, segala alat pendeteksi ditempelkan ke tubuh kita. Salah satu suara sebelum terbius yang paling keras terdengar adalah bunyi deteksi jantung. Disitu kami menyadari bahwa jantung sedemikian berubahnya saat perasaan kita ulang-alik atas ketegangan sebelum di operasi. Ketika itu disekitar kami juga sedang beredar film kartun Happy Tree Friends, menurut kami film tersebut tidak lucu, namun beberapa orang kami lihat begitu gembira dan terbahak-bahak menontonnya.
Awalnya cita-cita kami adalah bermain alat detak jantung, dari memproduksi karya berbasis suara, sampai berbagai bentuk karya yang bisa lahir dari bermain alat deteksi ini. Namun membeli alat deteksi jantung, tentu saja tidak kejadian, karena mahal. Mau meminjam atau melakukannya di rumah sakit/fasilitas kesehatan juga tidak mungkin, bagaimana apabila diwaktu yang bersamaan ada orang sakit yang membutuhkannya? Berbagai hal berbau prosedur tidak membiarkan kami menggunakannya dalam keadaan tidak sakit, apalagi demi alasan untuk kesenian.
Akhirnya kami berpikir untuk membuat projek seni, mengajak beberapa orang yang kami kenal, untuk membicarakan hal apa sajakah disekitar kita yang mampu menggugah rasa, secara fisik mengubah detak jantung saat loncatan adrenalin naik/turun. Dikarenakan kami berlatar belakang seni rupa, maka kami membayangkan projek seni ini dimulai dari percakapan kemudian diakhiri dengan produk seni rupa sederhana kemudian diakhiri kembali dengan percakapan.
Sebelum mengajak lebih banyak orang lagi, kami menentukan kira-kira topik apakah yang akrab disekitar kami saat itu, yang mudah menggugah perasaan seseorang. Kami menentukan beberapa topik: sex, aborsi, pernikahan, kartun, cinta dan bencana alam. Topik-topik tersebut menjadi kerangka sesi. Masing-masing pertemuan dimulai dengan mengisi quesioner, menonton film yang sebagian besar dokumenter, kemudian disediakan kertas serta alat gambar sederhana untuk direspon saat film mematik imajinasi. Harapannya imajinasi yang dipatik kemudian diejawantahkan dalam bentuk gambar/lainnya, adalah gambaran perasaan personal atas topik tersebut. Kami memilih film/gambar bergerak sebagai pematik emosi personal, juga karena bentuk ini yang konon paling mudah di proses kilat dalam kerja otak sesorang, yang tidak mempunyai masalah dengan penglihatan dan pendengaran.

Heart Melody #2 adalah seri kedua dari kegiatan workshop, diskusi dan
pameran mengenal kekerasan terselubung (simbolik) sehari-sehari.
Kegiatan ini digagas oleh Ferial, aktivis dan seniman muda dari
Bandung. Heart Melody #1 berlangsung di Bandung berkolaborasi dengan
IF dan BTW (nama ruang alternatif di Bandung). Dan pada yang kedua
ini mengambil tempat di kota Yogyakarta, bertempat di Artuary (ruang
pamer dan kegiatan) OCC (Open Circuit Community, lembaga Kajian
Budaya Visual dan Anak Muda).
Heart Melody berawal dari pengamatan Ferial pada meningkatnya
kekerasaan simbolik sehari-sehari yang antara lain tampil melalui
media cetak dan audio visual dikehidupan sehari-hari. Dari
kegelisahan ini, Ferial kemudian merancang metode workshop
alternatif yang tujuannya adalah menggugah kesadaran akan hal itu
khususnya dikalangan generasi muda.
Frase Heart Melody dipilih oleh Ferial, Heart berarti hati dan melody
berarti melodi. Frase sekaligus menjelaskan tujuan kegiatan ini yaitu
untuk melihat sejauh mana sensitifitas generasi muda pada kekerasaan
simbolik ini, kemudian bersama-sama menstimulus untuk mencari solusi-
solusi yang bisa menjadi rekomendasi publik. Melalui kegiatan ini,
diharapkan generasi muda dimasa depan bisa lebih peka terhadap
kekerasaan simbolik, juga menyadari posisi strategis anak muda
ditengah budaya hedonisme yang kian mengikis kesadaran kritis ini.
This art project was initiated by me and Ori Riantori, it happened in mid-2005 at BTW space and iF Venue - Bandung (March-April). Then the second to Yogyakarta at Outmags Artuary / Open Circuit Community (June-July).
The project started after we share our appendectomy experience which grow to the sharing about various things. In the surgery process before anesthesia, all the detectors attached to our bodies. One of the loudest sound before anesthetized is from the heart detection. There, we realized our heart change very quick when we feel the different tension before surgery. At that time the Happy Tree Friends cartoon also very popular among our friends circle, we think that cartoon is not funny, but some people we see are so excited and laughing watching it.
At the beginning our idea was to play the heart detector device, from producing sound-based artworks, through various forms of artworks that can be come out from playing this detection devices. But buying a cardiac detection devices was not happening, because it is expensive. Want to borrow or do it in the hospital / health facility is not possible, what if the same time there's sick peoples who need it? Various things upon procedural reason does not allow us to use it when we are not sick, especially for the arts sake.
Finally we thought of making art projects, invite a few people we knew, to talk about what are all around us were able to arouse a sense, physically alter a heart rate along with our adrenaline when stepping up / down. Due to our visual art background, then we imagine this art project started from a conversation then concludes with a simple artworks then ends back to the conversation.
When this project was brought to Yogyakarta, Sujud Dartanto (founder and manager OCC) saw another major theme, about: the sensitivity of the young generation towards violence. Ori did not participate at that time, only me who continue this project. Thanks to Sujud, this project brought me into a deeper discussion. The observations about the feeling are getting rich, not stop only on psychology theory, but extends to the cultural background of young generation, research the further visual studies as well as the function and how the artworks works on humans. Then I do a hearing in PUSdEP (Center for History and Political Ethics) - Sanata Dharma University, then they become a sponsor of this second project. For a few weeks I was accompanied by Sujud and Lian Gogali under PUSdEP suggestions for deepening the issues. The discussion in Yogyakarta also developed with the theme: Youth and Violence in the Media and Audio Visual, invited two other speakers: Kurniawan Adi (Rumah Sinema) and Nuraini Juliastuti (Kunci Cultural Studies Center).

Heart Melody # 2 is the second series of workshops, discussions and
exhibition about everyday covert violence (symbolic).
This activity was initiated by Ferial, activists and young artists from
Bandung. Heart Melody # 1 took place in Bandung in collaboration with
IF and BTW (the name of an alternative space in Bandung). And in the second

Heart Melody originated from Ferial observations on how the everyday
symbolic violence increase among others through
print media and audio-visual on our daily life. From
this thought, Ferial then create the alternative workshop methods
with the goal of raising the awareness about it,
especially among the younger generation.
Heart Melody phrase chosen by Ferial, Heart means the feeling and melody
means the melody. The phrase also explains the purpose of this activity
to see the further sensitivity of the younger generation on symbolic
violence, then together stimulates to seek the solution which could be
a public recommendations. Through these activities,
it expected for the young generation to be more sensitive towards
symbolic violence, is also to open the strategic position
of young people in the middle of hedonism culture
which increasing critical awareness.
